M. Kalashnikov's intense activity in the design and conception of firearms led him to produce machine gun rifles and general-purpose machineguns over the decades, as well as the famous AK series automatic rifles from which they often inherited the basic functioning. The RPK submachine gun rifle, for example, shares operation, ammunition and appearance with the AKM (modernised AK-47). Apart from mounting a longer barrel with integrated bipod and a general redoubt, the only differences with the AKM are the increased useful range and rate of fire. The RPK project developed in parallel with the AK project, in fact when the AKM was replaced by the AK74 the RPK project evolved into the RPK-74, again inheriting features and ammunition from the famous assault rifle. The Kalashnikov PK, on the other hand, is a light machine gun with integrated bipod, commissioned by the Soviet Army's General Artillery Department to M. Kalashnikov, and introduced in 1961. A few years later it was improved and lightened and became the PKM light machine gun.
